The Organization Behind the Project
The Spanish Organization of Astronomy Volunteers (OVAE) is a non-profit entity formed entirely by a passionate group of amateur astronomers and committed citizens. Driven by our deep passion for the cosmos, we dedicate our free time, outside of our regular professions, to build and maintain this platform.
Founded in 2025, eclipseseguro.es was born as the official public initiative backed by OVAE. Our purpose is to offer an independent verification service regarding the safety of solar filters, while simultaneously conducting scientific outreach to prepare the public for astronomical events in our country.
Why did we create this checklist?
During the unforgettable 2024 total solar eclipse in the United States, we witnessed a heartbreaking reality: amidst the awe and wonder, several people suffered permanent eye damage and lifelong impairments because they unknowingly purchased counterfeit or uncertified eclipse glasses. The joy of witnessing a cosmic marvel turned into a personal tragedy.
We want to ensure this never happens in Spain. Our greatest hope is that everyone, from families with young children to seasoned astronomy enthusiasts, can experience the magic of the upcoming solar eclipses safely and joyfully, without fear or consequences. Inspired by the incredible work of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), OVAE decided to step up by creating this dedicated reference list.
