The Organization Behind the Project

The Volunteer Astronomy Observers of Spain (OVAE) are an informal collective without legal personality (natural persons), entirely formed by a passionate group of amateur astronomers and committed citizens. Motivated by our deep passion for the cosmos, we dedicate our free time, outside of our regular professions, to build and maintain this platform.

Initiated in 2025, eclipseseguro.es was born as an independent citizen initiative driven by OVAE. Our purpose is to offer orientative reference information regarding the safety of solar filters, while also performing scientific outreach to prepare the public for astronomical events in our country.

Why did we create this checklist?

During the unforgettable 2024 total solar eclipse in the United States, we witnessed a heartbreaking reality: amidst the awe and wonder, several individuals suffered permanent eye damage and lifelong impairments because they unknowingly purchased counterfeit or uncertified eclipse glasses. The joy of witnessing a cosmic marvel turned into a personal tragedy.

Inspired by the incredible work of the American Astronomical Society (AAS), OVAE decided to step forward by creating this informative reference list. As a collective of natural persons, we publish this list in good faith to help minimize risks, but warn that we are not an official entity and the end user assumes full responsibility for their purchase and use.
